Paint your windows with our homemade window paint!

Window Paint

Window Paint

Stuck indoors with nothing fun to do?

Mix up a batch of our homemade window paint and decorate your windows! This recipe makes a thick, opaque window paint, that’s non-toxic and is easy to clean!

What You Will Need:

  • 1 cup Baby Shampoo
  • 1/2 cup Cornstarch
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Small Containers (we like to use resealable margarine tubs)
  • Food Coloring or Liquid Watercolor Paints
  • Paint Brushes or just your fingers!

What You Do:

  • Combine baby shampoo and cornstarch in a bowl and stir well.
  • Divide the mixture into small containers, then add food coloring to make the desired colors of paint.
  • Use a paintbrush or your fingers to apply the paint to a window.
  • After the paint has dried, and it is time to remove your artwork from the window, wipe clean with a damp paper towel.

Variations and Additional Notes:

  • If you don’t have baby shampoo, a clear dish washing liquid can be substituted.
  • Encourage your kids to paint on the windows with various sized paintbrushes, with their fingers, or with other items such as a feather or a sponge. Experiment to see which tool is the most fun to paint with; which method produces the desired results.
  • If you have leftover paint, seal the container and store it in the refrigerator. We have found that this paint will last much longer when stored this way.
  • If it is safe to do so, tape a drawing to the other side of the window glass to use as a pattern or template for painting. We have a large selection of Coloring Books that make perfect templates!
  • Decorate your windows for each change in the seasons: spring flowers; summer sunshine; fall leaves; or snowflakes. Painting your windows is a fun way to welcome the seasons!
  • Window painting is a unique way to practice spelling or math! Just paint your wordlist or math facts on the windows! A fun, memorable way to study!
  • Window painting is a great rainy day activity! Kids love the experience of painting on glass!
  • When painting windows, take care not to paint the walls or window trim! The window paint may stain these surfaces.
