Celebrate the States Series – #25: Missouri
Join us on an educational adventure through each state in the USA! Each post in this series focuses on one state, and includes a regional recipe from that state. This is a fun way to get your kids involved in cooking, as well as learn a bit about United States geography! The post also includes a link to the featured state’s website, where you can learn more about the state. We also include free forms that you can download and print to use along the journey. Geography has never been so delicious!

RECIPE:
Did you know that Missouri is the largest producer of black walnuts in the United States?
This recipe uses walnuts to add a nice crunch to this quick bread.
MISSOURI Black Walnut Quickbread
What You Will Need:
- Vegetable Oil Cooking Spray
- 3 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 5 teaspoons Baking Powder
- 1/2 cup Sugar
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground Nutmeg
- 2 large Eggs
- 1 cup Milk
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 cup melted Margarine
- 1 cup Black Walnuts, chopped
- 9 x 5 x 3 inch Loaf Pan
- Large Mixing Bowl
- Medium Mixing Bowl
- Wire Whip
What You Do:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Spray a loaf pan with vegetable oil cooking spray.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a medium sized mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and melted margarine.
- Add the egg mixture to the flour mixture and stir together just until the dry ingredients are moistened.
- Fold walnuts into batter mixture.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan, and bake for about 1 hour or until the center springs back when touched.
- Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes before removing from the pan.
- Slice and serve!
