Sunny Days and Starry Nights

Ah… the sunny days of Summer, and those starry, starry nights!

Summer is a time for playing outside – both day and night – and creating childhood memories.  Who can resist warm summer days spent playing in the water and making rainbows with garden hoses?  Or staying up past bedtime, laying in the grass and wishing on stars?

Summer inspires a sense of adventure and wonder.  To help inspire your kids, we’ve put together our creative summer activities and new products to make summer learning fun!

Sunny Day Activities

Here are some of our favorite ideas for playing on sunny summer days.  Of course, these activities are educational, too!

Play With Water – Want a fun way to cool off on a hot day?  Here are six great ideas for outdoor water play – something children of all ages will enjoy!  These activities are great for children because they are open-ended and provide opportunities for creative learning experiences.

Water Sprayers – Kids love to dance around under the tin-can shower to cool off on a hot summer day – and your plants just might get watered, too!

Dry Ice – Make a bubbly brew in your backyard… smokey bubbles multiply, powered by dry ice!

Swimming Pool Games – What’s more fun than swimming on a hot Summer day?  Playing games in the pool!  Here is a collection of games for pool fun, no matter if you have a small wading pool, a large family pool, or even if you’re at the beach.

Water Balloon Land Mine – Here is a fun backyard game that encourages teamwork.

Starry Night Activities

For those clear summer nights, here are some of our favorite creative play ideas.

Collect Meteorites – Did you know you can collect meteorites from outerspace – right in your own backyard?  We’ll show you how!

Star Light, Star Bright – Enjoy the fireworks in the night sky, stargazing with your children.

Night Hikes – Plan a night hike with your child!  Children love going to walks at night.  Familiar places look very different at night, and sound different, too!

Glow Stick Tag – Kids love to play outside at night!  Here is a fun game to play while campling, or even in your own backyard.

Did you Know?

Did you know that the Dog Days of Summer is the name for the most sultry period of summer, from about July 3 to August 11?

In the summer, Sirius, the "dog star", rises and sets with the sun.  The ancients believed that its heat added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather… the "dog days of summer".

Sirius is the brightest star of the constellation Canis Major, the "Greater Dog" in Latin.

Creative Thinking Activity

Have your child write or draw pictures of their ideas.
